Mission 37 is a convivial machinima group. For those of you that don't want to look that up in a dictionary,
it means that we're just a group of friends that make movies in games together. Many of our machinimas are skit-based, such as "Messing
With Stuff", but we also have several series in the works such as "Gmod Trek" and "Basket Harbor".
Several years ago, in late 2007, Docithe was an aspiring machinima maker who joined the universe of Garry's Mod. Coming from several
short, poorly done machinimas in other games, he had very little experience. His first attempt at a machinima came shortly after he met someone named
"Combine_Betrayer", now known as "Gunso". Together, they created an episode of a skit-based show called "Kombine Krew", the first episode of which
can still be seen on Docithe's youtube channel with no audio.
A few months later, Gunso and Docithe were messing around in a random GMod server when a player named "{TG}Gotchagary" joined.
A new and unbiased face, Docithe convinced Gotchagary to help him kill Gunso. One thing lead to another, and eventually Docithe and Gotchagary began playing
GMod together almost every day. It was around this time as well that Docithe met up once more with an old friend from his days before GMod. This player was
"TruBluRage", now sometimes known as "Archangel".
Knowing that "Kombine Krew", the skit show, had failed (having only ~600 views to this day), Docithe began work on a movie with his
new found friends Gunso, Gotchagary, and TruBluRage. This movie was to be about a group of Valve agents who crossed the barrier between videogames to help players
that were stuck. It was around this time that Gunso introduced to the group one of his friends, a player named "Kods". Together, they worked on creating this movie.
TruBluRage was to play the team leader, Gotchagary was to play the brains of the operation, Kods was to play an artifically intelligent robot, trained for
in-game combat, and Gunso was to play the player stuck in Half-Life. The group came up with the name "Mission 37" for this movie. A trailer for it can be seen
here.
Eventually, this project proved more complicated than was anticipated. The group was operating off no script, no scheduled film times, and
very complicated scenes. Ultimately, the project was dropped, and Gunso became largely inactive, fading into the background. Docithe created a tribute video for the
original Mission 37 film using many of the completed scenes, but it was lost in mid-2009 when his hard drive passed away, along with all the old film and a few scenes
from Village 37, a new project they had just started, and the group entered a lull.
Inspiration came not a month after this loss. Production started again on reshooting what was lost of Village 37. Along with this motivation came
a call for unity! It was then that Docithe, Gotchagary, TruBluRage, and Kods forged the convivial machinima making group "Mission 37" as a tribute to its first ever
project. The original Mission 37 logo can be seen here, the first video uploaded to
Mission37Group's youtube channel. Village 37 was released, but that project would never
be touched again.
It was around this time that Docithe and Gotchagary made an interesting discovery; a map of Star Trek's USS Enterprise NCC-1701. Although neither
actually watched Star Trek, they were quite taken by the map and decided to make a series based on what little knowledge they had of it. In early 2010, a
teaser for this series was released featuring their theme, which was purchased by Docithe
from an online production company. Over the years, Gotchagary reworked the theme to make it his own (v2,
v3).
With the release of GMod Trek, Mission 37's popularity boomed,
gaining Subscribers at an exponential rate. In GMod Trek Episode 2, Mission 37 used over 20 extras during production. During this production, however, GMod underwent a large
update which broke many add-ons. This resulted both in a massive production time, and the discovery of a new talent. One of the add-ons that
was broken was "Machinima Hands". Docithe was the first to code and release a new working edition of "Machinima Hands". This was when
"Silenzio", now known as "Rain", was discovered through Garrysmod.org's comment box. Rain had a comedy series named "The Balloonman Prophecies",
which Mission 37 adopted, as well as Rain's help as a voice actor.
From then on, Mission 37 grew into what it is today. Due to the crew's busy schedules and the complex nature of filming Gmod Trek, its production time remains
through the roof, having only released two and a half episodes by 2012, but it is still going! In early 2012, Mission 37 decided upon a shorter, easier to produce series that could be
made in-between episodes of GMod Trek. Mission 37 also contracted a new mapper to make custom designs for future GMod Trek episodes.
Mission 37 continues to grow towards the future. With no forseeable end in sight, serverspace is the limit, and we will continue messing with stuff. Our main goal
is to shorten our production time and become one of the fore-runners of the Machinima world today. There is still a long way to go and much to be done, but we are confident we'll reach it!
There are many tools we use for producing our videos, but the most common are Fraps
, Adobe After Effects and
Cyberlink PowerDirector.
Keep checking back for updates!
